May Chang Essential Oil (Litsea cubeba) — a juicy, sweet-lemony, brightening scent that livens up any room in an instant.

Litsea cubeba is an evergreen shrub of the laurel family (Lauraceae), native to southern Asia. It grows up to 10 metres tall and bears small, pepper-like berries — hence the name ‘mountain pepper’. It is also known as aromatic litsea or May Chang. Although its leaves and flowers, which bloom from March to April, smell of lemon, it isn’t related to citrus fruits but to bay laurel and cinnamon. It grows mainly in the tropical and subtropical regions of India, China, Taiwan and Japan.

Litsea has a long history in Chinese herbal tradition, but today its oil is prized above all for its scent. Citrus-like constituents make up over 70% of its composition, giving a fresh, bright, sweet-lemony aroma — perfect for a cheerful mood on a grey day.

How to use May Chang essential oil

• in a diffuser or oil burner — a few drops for a refreshing atmosphere while you work,
• as a room spray — with water in a spray bottle,
• in homemade cleaners — for a fresh lemony scent,
• in the bath — a few drops mixed with a carrier oil or bath salts,
• for massage — diluted in a carrier oil.

Do not ingest. Always dilute in a carrier oil before applying to skin and patch test first: apply a drop of diluted oil to the inner forearm — if any reaction appears within 24 hours, do not use on skin.
