Description
Sweet birch essential oil is full of surprises — instead of woodland green, you get a bold, cool, minty freshness.
Betula pendula, commonly known as silver birch, warty birch, European white birch or East Asian white birch, is a tree of the Betulaceae family, native to Europe and parts of Asia. A fun fact: in spring, large quantities of sap rise up the trunk and can be tapped. It contains around 1% sugars and can be drunk fresh, concentrated by evaporation like maple syrup, or fermented into wine.
The oil is obtained from young leaf buds. Its scent is unique — very minty, much like wintergreen oil. Its main constituents are salicylic acid, methyl salicylate, betulene and betulenol.
How to use birch essential oil
- in a diffuser or oil burner — 2–3 drops for a crisp, cool atmosphere,
- in fragrance blends — with conifer, mint, citrus or lavender oils,
- for a post-workout massage — a small amount, diluted in a carrier oil, for a pleasant cooling sensation.
Capacity: 10 ml.
Caution
This oil contains methyl salicylate — do not swallow, and do not use on children or if you are sensitive to salicylates (e.g. aspirin). Apply to skin only when diluted in a carrier oil, and only to small areas. Patch test before first use: apply a drop of diluted oil to the inner forearm; if any reaction appears within 24 hours, do not use on skin. Keep out of reach of children. If pregnant, breastfeeding or under medical care, consult your doctor. Avoid contact with eyes and sensitive areas.
