An essential oil diffuser is a convenient way to enjoy your favourite scent at home — with no flame, smoke or candle to watch. Here is how the types of diffuser differ, what to look for when buying and how to look after the device so it lasts for years.
How does an ultrasonic diffuser work?
In the tank of water with a few drops of oil, a small membrane vibrates at an ultrasonic frequency. The vibrations break the water into a very fine, cool mist that carries the scent of the oil. Nothing is heated, so the scent is soft and even.
USB diffuser, reed diffuser, oil burner or car diffuser?
| Type | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| USB diffuser | mist of water and oil, timer, lighting | anyone who wants convenience and no flame |
| Reed diffuser | fragrance oil travels up the reeds | bathroom and hallway, no power or attention |
| Oil burner | a tea light warms water with oil | fans of candlelight atmosphere |
| Car diffuser | felt pad with a drop of oil on the air vent | everyday travel |
6 things to look for
1. Tank capacity
A small tank (about 120 ml) is enough for a desk or a smaller bedroom. A larger one (300–400 ml) runs longer without refilling and suits a living room better.
2. Timer
A timer lets you set how long the diffuser runs — for example an hour in the evening or a few hours during the day. All diffusers in our shop have 1, 3 and 6-hour settings.
3. Automatic shut-off
When the water runs out, the device switches itself off. Convenient and safe — no need to keep checking the water level.
4. Power
A USB diffuser plugs into a charger, computer or power bank. Our models come with a 1 m cable.
5. Lighting
Colourful LED light creates a pleasant evening mood. It is good to be able to switch it off when the diffuser runs in the bedroom.
6. Look and size
A diffuser is always on display, so it should suit your interior. White housings fit bright, modern rooms, while a wood finish warms up a living room or bedroom.
How much oil, and which oils?
Usually 3–5 drops for a small tank and 6–10 drops for a large one are enough. It is better to start with less and add a drop or two if needed. To begin with, try lavender oils — compare French, English and Bulgarian lavender — or ready-made essential oil blends composed for a particular mood.
How to clean a diffuser
Every few uses, unplug it, pour out the remaining water, wipe the tank with a soft cloth and let it dry. Always wash the tank before changing scent so the oils do not mix. Boiled and cooled or filtered water is best — hard water leaves limescale faster.
Common mistakes
- filling above the marked line,
- too much oil — the scent becomes overwhelming,
- leaving water in the tank for several days,
- placing the diffuser right next to electronics, books or wooden furniture — the mist settles on surfaces.
