*Eucalyptus globulus*, commonly known as southern blue gum, is a tall evergreen tree of the myrtle family, endemic to south-eastern Australia. The oil is obtained by steam distillation of the leaves. *E. globulus* is the main source of the world’s eucalyptus oil, with China the largest producer. The oil is prized by the perfume and flavouring industries, and its high cineole content gives it a characteristic fresh, cooling scent that freshens the air beautifully.

### How to use eucalyptus oil

- in a diffuser or oil burner — 3–4 drops for a crisp, energising atmosphere,
- in the shower — a few drops on the wall or floor of the cubicle, away from the water stream, for a refreshing, sauna-like aroma,
- in the bath — a few drops mixed with a carrier oil or bath salts,
- for massage — diluted in a carrier oil, for a pleasant cooling sensation,
- as a room freshener — a few drops with water in a spray bottle.

**Caution**  
Essential oils are highly concentrated — do not swallow, and never apply to skin undiluted; always blend with a carrier oil first. Patch test before first use: apply a drop of diluted oil behind the ear or on the inner forearm; if any reaction appears within 24 hours, do not use on skin. Keep out of reach of children. If pregnant, breastfeeding or under medical care, consult your doctor. Avoid contact with eyes, the inner ear and sensitive areas.
